Assume I Can!

A free resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers on shifting mindsets around children with Down syndrome and disabilities. Told through the voice of Huru, a 7-year-old boy from Kenya with Down syndrome, this free downloadable guide offers a powerful reminder to the adults in children's lives: Down syndrome is an important part of who Huru is, but it is not all that he is. Too often, children with disabilities have their potential decided for them before anyone takes the time to truly know them. This guide challenges parents, educators, and caregivers to shift from assuming limitation to assuming capability, encouraging patience, opportunity, and belief in a child's ability to learn, make friends, do things independently, and dream big, even if it happens in their own time and their own way. Rather than a set of rules, "Assume I Can" is an invitation: to give children the time and space to try, to ask what they want to be rather than deciding for them, and to recognise that inclusion starts with the assumptions we carry.
