About Beyond 47
A movement rooted in love, dignity, and the belief that every person — regardless of ability — deserves a full place in society.
At Beyond 47, everything we do is rooted in a simple belief: every child deserves to belong, and every family deserves to feel supported, valued, and included.
Our work focuses on three interconnected areas that together help create more inclusive communities for children with Down syndrome and other developmental support needs.
Inclusive Storytelling
Through the Huru & Maya book series and other educational resources, we introduce children to friendship, kindness, and inclusion in ways that feel natural and relatable. When children encounter different experiences and abilities in the stories they read, they learn to see one another with empathy, curiosity, and respect.
Parent & Family Support
Raising a child with additional support needs can feel overwhelming, particularly when families lack access to information or a supportive community. Our Parent Support Circles provide welcoming spaces where parents and caregivers can connect, share experiences, learn from one another, and access practical guidance. By bringing families together, we help build confidence, reduce isolation, and strengthen support networks.
Advocacy & Community Education
Creating inclusive communities requires more than awareness. It requires action. We work alongside schools, healthcare providers, community organisations, faith leaders, and local stakeholders to promote understanding, reduce stigma, and improve access to opportunities and support services. Through advocacy, partnerships, and community engagement, we strive to create environments where every child can participate, learn, and thrive.
Our Core Values
Equal Worth
Every life has equal value — regardless of chromosomes, ability, or where someone was born.
Families First
We support the whole family, because when families thrive, so do the people they love.
Systemic Change
Individual support matters, but lasting change happens through education, policy, and shifting culture.
African Leadership
Our work is shaped by the communities we serve — African voices lead at every level.
Why “Beyond 47”?
Most people have 46 chromosomes. People with Down syndrome have 47. Our name is a celebration of that extra chromosome — and a declaration that we see far beyond the diagnosis.
We see potential. We see purpose. We see an extraordinary life waiting to be lived fully.
Our Mission
To empower individuals with Down syndrome and disabilities across Africa to live with dignity, purpose, and full participation in society.
Our Vision
An Africa where every person with Down syndrome is valued, included, and given every opportunity to achieve their full potential.
