About Beyond 47

A movement rooted in love, dignity, and the belief that every person — regardless of ability — deserves a full place in society.

At Beyond 47, everything we do flows from one belief: that every child belongs, and every family deserves to feel that.

That belief takes shape through three interconnected areas of work — each distinct, but woven together into a single vision for more inclusive communities.

Inclusive Storytelling

Stories are where it all begins. Through the Huru & Maya series and our educational resources, we introduce children to inclusion early, not as a lesson, but as something natural and familiar. When children see differences reflected in the stories they love, something shifts. Empathy takes root.

Parent & Family Support

No family should navigate this journey alone. Our Support Circles bring parents and caregivers together in honest, warm, and practical spaces where experiences are shared, questions are welcomed, and the simple act of being understood makes a real difference.

Advocacy & Community Education

Inclusion doesn't stop at the classroom door. We work alongside schools, healthcare providers, faith communities, and local leaders to open doors to education, therapies, support services, and real opportunity. Through partnerships, awareness events, and ongoing dialogue, we work to reduce stigma and help build systems that enable every family to thrive.

Our Core Values

Equal Worth

Every life has equal value — regardless of chromosomes, ability, or where someone was born.

Families First

We support the whole family, because when families thrive, so do the people they love.

Systemic Change

Individual support matters, but lasting change happens through education, policy, and shifting culture.

African Leadership

Our work is shaped by the communities we serve — African voices lead at every level.

Why “Beyond 47”?

Most people have 46 chromosomes. People with Down syndrome have 47. Our name is a celebration of that extra chromosome — and a declaration that we see far beyond the diagnosis.

We see potential. We see purpose. We see an extraordinary life waiting to be lived fully.

47
The number of chromosomes in the cells of a person with Down syndrome. One extra chromosome. One extraordinary life.
