New Partnership with the African Union on Disability Inclusion

Beyond 47 has been recognised as a civil society partner by the African Union, opening new doors for policy advocacy.

We are proud to share that Beyond 47 has been formally accredited as a civil society partner of the African Union Commission, with a focus on disability inclusion under the AU's Agenda 2063 framework.

What This Means

This accreditation gives us a formal voice in AU-level policy discussions, including:

  • The implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
  • The development of the Continental Plan of Action on Disability
  • Reporting mechanisms under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

Our Priorities

Our first engagement with the AU Commission will focus on three areas:

  1. Education data — advocating for disaggregated data on school enrolment for children with intellectual disabilities
  2. Healthcare standards — pushing for minimum standards of care for people with Down syndrome across member states
  3. Employment pathways — contributing to the AU's agenda on inclusive economic development

Gratitude

This recognition is the result of years of quiet, persistent advocacy by our team and partners. We are grateful to the African Union Commission for creating this pathway for civil society voices — and we are committed to using it responsibly and effectively.
