World Down Syndrome Day 2024: Recapping Our Events Across Africa

On 21 March, the Down Syndrome community in Kilifi, Kenya came together to celebrate, advocate, and connect.

Every year on 21 March — chosen to represent the 21st chromosome, present in triplicate in Down syndrome — communities around the world mark World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD).

This year, Beyond 47 coordinated simple get-togethers in Kilifi. We met with our children for the very first time, and what unfolded was something special. There were heartfelt conversations, shared experiences, and many moments of laughter as we watched our children play together so naturally, as if they had always known each other. It was a powerful reminder of how deeply our children belong and how much they thrive in spaces where they are understood and embraced.

One moment that stayed with us was when Pricilla shared her diagnosis journey. She spoke of how, on that first night, the medic did not clearly explain the diagnosis, but instead asked her to compare her face with her daughter’s in the mirror. She spent hours doing just that, searching for answers in uncertainty. Her story resonated deeply, reflecting an experience many parents quietly carry: confusion, isolation, and unanswered questions in those early moments. And yet, what we are building together is the opposite of that experience.

We are creating a space of clarity, support, and belonging. We look forward to many more gatherings like this, to continue connecting, encouraging one another, and building a strong, supportive community for our children.
