Beyond 47 Launches Teacher Training Programme in Kenya

A new initiative will equip 500 Kenyan teachers with the skills to support students with Down syndrome in mainstream classrooms.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our flagship teacher training programme in Kenya, in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

About the Programme

Over the next 18 months, we will train 500 primary and secondary school teachers across Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu in inclusive teaching practices for students with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

The programme covers:

  • Understanding Down syndrome — medical and developmental basics
  • Adapting classroom activities and assessments
  • Communication strategies for students with varying abilities
  • Working with families to extend learning at home
  • Building an inclusive school culture

Why This Matters

Fewer than 15% of children with Down syndrome in Kenya are currently enrolled in school. Of those, many are placed in segregated settings that limit their social development and long-term prospects. We believe this can change — and it starts with teachers.

What's Next

Training cohorts will begin in September. We will publish outcomes and case studies as the programme progresses. If you are a school in Kenya that would like to participate, please contact us at info@beyond47.org.
